Mack Trucks pulled back the curtain April 29 on plans to launch a battery-electric version of the Volvo Group division’s recently unveiled flagship on-highway Class 8 tractor, the Pioneer.

CEO Martin Lundstedt dropped the bombshell in the final moments of the truck and bus maker’s first quarter of 2025 earnings call, revealing an additional 200 or so jobs would be cut.

The truck manufacturer confirmed earlier reports about the layoffs. The decision was made in the face of economic and regulatory uncertainty that has put downward pressure on orders.

Mack Trucks unveiled its newest Class 8 model, the Mack Pioneer, which officials touted as its most aerodynamic and driver-focused highway truck to date.

Gunnar Brunius, Mack Trucks vice president of Lehigh Valley Operations, couldn’t hide his enthusiasm in comparing the newest model, Pioneer, to the former standard-bearer, Anthem.

President Stephen Roy announced Mack Trucks' upcoming semi, designed to compete in 70% of the market and triple the company's longhaul market share.   

Whether the tractor will be an update of Mack’s existing on-highway flagship, the Anthem, or a new model altogether is unclear.
