U.S. net trailer orders in May reached 14,250 units, the lowest total this year, ACT Research Co. reported, calling it an expected seasonal slowdown.

Class 8 truck orders in May plunged 30% year-over-year, two research firms said, underscoring two truck manufacturers’ recently announced plans to trim production for the second time this year.

Class 8 truck orders tumbled 39% year-over-year in April, reaching a seven-year low for the month, in the midst of a weak freight environment, slumping used-truck prices and overstocked dealer lots, two consulting firms reported.

U.S. net orders of trailers hit 13,800 in March, down 39% year-over-year as all but dump trailers showed weakness, while backlogs remained solid, research firm FTR said.

New orders for U.S. factory goods fell in February and business spending on capital goods was much weaker than initially thought, the latest indications that economic growth slowed further in the first quarter.

January’s Class 8 North American orders just cleared 18,000, down 48% year-over-year but within expectations as fleets’ ordering patterns shifted into a more typical range, analysts said.

Manufacturing in the United States shrank in January for a fourth consecutive month as businesses cut staffing plans. Growth resumed in new orders and production, indicating some stabilization in the industry.

U.S. trailer orders for 2015 fell 11% compared with 2014 to slightly more than 315,000, but shipments of trailers hit an all-time high as they climbed to more than 300,000, ACT Research said.
