President Trump should renegotiate Nafta in a way that builds upon — rather than hinders — the movement of goods and people between Canada, the United States and Mexico, the head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said.

MEXICO CITY — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce told a closed-door gathering of Mexican and American corporate and government leaders that it is aiming to keep Donald Trump from fulfilling his campaign threat to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement, according to three people with direct knowledge of the matter.

Trucks carried almost two-thirds of the freight moving between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico in September, and continued to be the most heavily used mode, according to federal TransBorder Freight Data released Nov. 29.

Trucks continued in July to be the most heavily used mode for moving goods to and from the United States and both its Nafta trade partners, Canada and Mexico, hauling 64.7% of the freight, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported Sept. 22.
