SAN DIEGO — ’s model has reached 20 million miles of on-the-road customer operations, the OEM said Oct. 25. The regional haul battery-electric tractor reached 10 million miles in December 2024.

Commercial orders for the tractor began in December 2020.

More than 700 Volvo VNR Electric trucks are now operating across the United States and Canada, VTNA said at American Trucking Associations’ 2025 Management Conference and Exhibition.

“Reaching this milestone is a testament to our customers’ commitment to sustainable transportation and our dealer network’s dedication to supporting them every step of the way,” VTNA President Peter Voorhoeve said.

“The path to zero emissions is shaped by market conditions, which are moving slowly. We remain committed to our vision to create a world we want to live in by using zero-emissions solutions in combination with fuel-efficient combustion engines with reduced climate impact. Solutions that will work for our clients where sustainability meets affordability,” Voorhoeve added.

Some 83 dealerships are certified to work on the VNR Electric in 33 states and four Canadian provinces.

Another 13 locations are currently in the certification pipeline.

When the VNR Electric hit the 10 million-mile mark, almost 600 tractors were operational. The truck hit the 8 million-mile mark in October 2024.

The VNR Electric is available in five configurations: 4x2 straight truck, 6x4 straight truck, 4x2 tractor, 6x2 tractor and 6x4 tractor.

It will be joined in the VTNA battery-electric tractor portfolio in the coming quarters by a configuration of the company’s flagship Class 8 tractor.

The truck maker in June 2024 offered the North American press corps a first glimpse of a pre-production battery-electric VNL 440 regional haul semi, which is a 42-inch midroof sleeper model.

When the truck was unveiled, orders for the VNL Electric were expected to open in the last couple of months of 2025 or at the beginning of 2026.

Since then, appetite slowed for battery-electric trucks as a result of waning federal government support and the ongoing freight recession slashing carrier capital expenditure.

The VNL 440 Electric is the first battery-electric powertrain to emerge while VTNA was overhauling both the VNL and VNR.

VTNA unveiled the VNL redesign in January 2024.

In March, VTNA relaunched the diesel VNR at ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn., declaring a 90% redesign of the previous iteration.

The VNR is the same body-in-white as the VNL, but has a different cab position.

VTNA originally debuted the VNR in April 2017, replacing the VNM, which had been around since the 1990s.
