A bill requiring motorists on Florida highways to stay out of the far left lane, except when passing another vehicle, was approved by both branches of the state Legislature April 7 and expected shortly at the governor’s office, an official with the state’s Office of Policy and Budget said.

Truckload carrier Knight Transportation Inc. said late Wednesday its net income for the first quarter was $12.8 million or 22 cents per share, compared with $9.3 million or 16 cents a year earlier.

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. reported its first-quarter income dropped 79% to $5 million or 7 cents a share, compared with $24.3 million or 32 cents a year earlier.

The average national price of retail diesel fuel dropped 5.7 cents to $2.259 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Monday. Gasoline prices also tumbled from four weeks of records, dropping 4.3 cents to $2.237 a gallon, DOE said.

Auto hauler Allied Holdings Inc. reported a net fourth-quarter loss of $33.4 million or $3.75 per share, compared with a loss of $4.3 million or 51 cents per share for the same quarter the previous year.
