A day after the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released its final rule on the use of electronic logs for all trucks built since 2000, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association filed suit against the agency.

The nation’s fleet of Class 8 trucks in operation climbed 5% during the first nine months of the year to a record 3.93 million, IHS Automotive reported, driven in part by an 11% jump in registrations of new trucks in the third quarter.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Dec. 10 announced its long-awaited final rule requiring that interstate drivers use electronic recording devices intended to enforce hours-of-service regulations, and reduce driver fatigue and paperwork for motor carriers and drivers.

The federal rule requiring carriers to use electronic logging devices will dramatically accelerate the industry’s adoption of onboard technology, resulting in a market where some carriers will focus only on basic compliance while others will look for additional features to improve efficiency, suppliers and analysts said.

MARSHALL, Mich. — Eaton Corp. and Cummins Inc. recently announced powertrain options that enhance engine downspeeding at highway speeds and increase driver control using automated transmissions at slow speeds.

Engine maker Cummins Inc. said last week it would reduce its workforce by 2,000 employees, or about 4% of its global payroll, and close or restructure some manufacturing facilities as a result of lower demand for its products, including truck engines.
