Groups representing key segments of the freight industry had mostly positive reactions to federal regulators’ proposal to change hours-of-service rules for commercial drivers.

DETROIT — Ford is extending the warranties on about 560,000 small cars in the United States and Canada to cover a litany of problems with a troubled 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Aug. 14 issued a long-awaited proposal to make changes to its hours-of-service rules that would increase truck drivers’ flexibility with their 30-minute rest break and with allocating time in a sleeper berth.
