The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission voted Monday to increase its tolls by 12% for cash users and 2% for E-ZPass transponder users, effective in January.

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has approved a 10-year toll plan that’s expected to increase rates by about 2.7% annually for cars and trucks.

Transportation officials in Kansas, faced with growing congestion in metropolitan areas, are considering more tolls to keep traffic moving, the Kansas City Star reported.

The nation’s large and growing number of highways, bridges and tunnels that are using electronic systems to collect tolls are creating problems for truckers who cross multiple jurisdictions because most systems’ transponders won’t work on other systems.

The North Carolina House voted unanimously to ban tolls on any existing interstate highway, which would end the state’s plan to toll Interstate 95.

A Virginia judge has ruled unconstitutional the state’s plan to begin tolling in February on two existing tunnels between Norfolk and Portsmouth to pay for construction of a third.

The Texas toll road with the country’s fastest speed limit, 85 mph, has drawn half as many drivers as expected in its first few months, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

The New York State Thruway Authority plans to lay off about 150 toll takers, drivers, mechanics and other workers, as the result of its decision last year to scrap a plan for new tolls on trucks, the  Syracuse (N.Y.) Post-Standard reported.

It appears that the opponents of Virginia’s plan to put tolls on Interstate 95 have won the battle, and we’re glad to hear it.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation supports a bill removing a mandate to build three toll-road projects, the Associated Press reported.
