Heidi King took a step forward in her quest to become administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating some 3 million U.S. vehicles made by Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. after thousands of complaints that the vehicles went up in flames even without being involved in a crash.

President Donald Trump on Jan. 16 nominated Heidi King to lead the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and also announced more nominees for senior roles at other agencies that oversee safety and commerce.

Nominees for senior posts across federal transportation agencies have the potential to be included in an end-of-year measure that Senate leaders plan to formalize before the congressional session comes to a close.

The Commerce Committee on June 27 approved by a slim margin the nomination of Heidi King to lead the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, setting up consideration on the Senate floor.

Concern that Democrats would vote as a block against the nomination of Heidi King to be administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration led to a delay in the scheduled vote, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D) told reporters May 21.

The Road to Zero Coalition announced three more recipients of the Safe System Innovation Grants on April 23.

National Safety Council CEO Deborah Hersman noted the goal of the newly formed Road to Zero Coalition is to dramatically reduce traffic deaths.
