WASHINGTON — Sen. Pete Domenici, the New Mexico Republican who chairs the Budget Committee in the Senate, wants to give the Customs Service an additional $500 million to spend on brick and mortar for its facilities along the U.S.-Mexico border.

He also wants new grants to clean up air and water problems in the region and money to build a port of entry that would serve as a technological prototype for processing trade.

omenici told members of the Border Trade Alliance, who are mostly local busines and government officials from Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas, that the “time is right” for improving conditions for the region, with an emphasis on trade with Mexico.
