Norfolk Southern Corp.’s second-quarter profit jumped 42 percent from the same quarter last year, the Eastern freight railroad reported.
Net income rose to $557 million, or $1.56 per share, up from $392 million, or $1.04 per share, a year ago, the rail line said in a statement late Tuesday.
Railway operating revenue rose 18% to $2.9 billion.
Intermodal revenue rose 20% to $540 million, and general merchandise revenue rose 12% to $1.4 billion. Coal revenue gained 28% to $893 million.
