The freight market experienced another monthly dip in tonnage due to choppy market conditions in April, though it was up from last year, reported.

The ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index slipped 0.3% sequentially to 113 from 113.3 the prior month but increased 0.1% from the same time in 2024. This marked the fourth straight year-over-year increase.

After surging 2.8% in February, and hitting the highest level since late May 2024, tonnage fell a combined 1.8% in March and April,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said. “Unfortunately, a recovery that was expected this year hasn’t transpired as the industry deals with a freight market in flux from tariffs and softening economic indicators.”

Tonnage also declined 2.2% sequentially to 112 when not adjusting for seasonality. ATA calculates its monthly tonnage index based on feedback from contract freight. In calculating the index, 100 represents 2015.
