Freight railroad Union Pacific Corp. said Thursday that its first-quarter profit more than doubled, to $311 million or $1.15 per share, from $128 million or 48 cents a year earlier.

Covenant Transport said late Wednesday it lost $884,000 or 6 cents a share in the first-quarter, compared with a $649,000 or 4-cent loss a year earlier.

Truckload carrier Knight Transportation reported a record first-quarter profit of $15.8 million or 18 cents a share, up from $12.8 million or 15 cents a year earlier.

Toronto-based transportation and logistics firm Vitran Corp.’s net income rose to a first-quarter record $3.8 million or 29 cents a share, up from $2.8 million or 22 cents last year.

Third-party logistics provider Hub Group reported a first-quarter profit of $9.1 million or 44 cents a share, up from $5.3 million or 25 cents last year.

Truckload carrier USA Truck said Thursday its first-quarter net income rose to $3.4 million or 30 cents a share, from $2.7 million or 29 cents a year earlier.

Wireless-services provider Qualcomm Inc. said late Wednesday that net income its second fiscal quarter ended march 26 rose to $593 million or 34 cents a share, from $532 million or 32 cents a year earlier.

Crude oil prices fell by the most in a month in early trading Thursday, after reaching another record high, of $72.49 a barrel, Bloomberg reported.
