Vitran Reports Record First-Quarter Income

oronto-based transportation and logistics firm Vitran Corp.’s net income rose to a first-quarter record $3.8 million or 29 cents a share, up from $2.8 million or 22 cents last year.

Vitran’s revenue rose 23% to $115.1 million, the company said late Wednesday.

Vitran has truckload and less-than-truckload operations in the United States and Canada.



The company said its earnings were boosted by acquisitions, including its $2.25 million purchase in January of Sierra West Express, a regional less-than-truckload carrier based in Nevada. (Click here for previous coverage.)

Operating income from its LTL business rose 55% in the quarter to $5.1 million while revenue rose 28% to $97.4 million.

Logistics segment operating rose 41% to $514,000, while revenue rose 6% to $9.4 million.

Truckload operating income declined to $410,000 from $742,000 a year earlier, while revenue fell to $8.3 million from $8.96 million.

Vitran is ranked No. 58 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
