GDP Falls at 1.3% Rate in 3Q; Inventories Shrink at Record Pace

The U.S. economy, which fell into recession in March, contracted at a 1.3% annual rate in the third quarter, even weaker than the Commerce Department had previously estimated, but Friday's gross domestic product report left many analysts feeling encouraged heading into 2002.
