When is the bubble going to pop? I personally have not taken a pay raise, and none of my employees or their family members has received one, either. As the price of fuel climbs, so do the prices of goods. Yet no one I have spoken to has been given an increase in pay to combat this issue.

Ryder System said Thursday its second-quarter net income rose to $70.3 million or $1.13 cents a share, from $63.3 million or 98 cents a year earlier.

Old Dominion Freight Line said Thursday its second-quarter net income jumped 55.3% to $21.6 million or 58 cents a share, from $13.9 million or 37 cents a year earlier.

Diesel engine maker Cummins Inc. said Thursday it earned $220 million or $4.38 a share in the second quarter, up 56% from $141 million or $2.83 a year earlier.

Universal Truckload Services said late Wednesday its net income for the second quarter increased 23.1% to a record $5.4 million or 33 cents a share, up from $4.4 million or 27 cents in 2005. Revenue rose 19.9% to $95.8 million.

DaimlerChrysler, the parent company of truck maker Freightliner LLC, said its Truck Group division posted a second-quarter operating profit of 704 million euros, up 34% from 524 million euros in 2005.

General Motors Corp. reported Wednesday a net loss of $3.2 billion or $5.62 a share, compared with a loss of $987 million or $1.75 a year ago.

First-time jobless claims fell by 7,000 to 298,000 last week, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

Durable goods orders rose more than forecast in June on demand for computers and commercial aircraft, the Commerce Department reported Friday.

Less-than-truckload carrier YRC Worldwide late Thursday reported its second-quarter earnings rose to $92.3 million or $1.58 a share, from $76.1 million or $1.38 cents in the same quarter last year.
