Five technology companies have recently unveiled upgrades to their systems serving the trucking industry.

To keep their customers’ equipment up and running, truck dealers are increasingly relying on complex algorithms and predictive modeling to maintain inventory levels that will ensure they have the parts truckers need right when they need them, according to dealers and manufacturers.

On Jan. 3, rules drafted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration went into effect, prohibiting interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers and intrastate hazardous materials drivers from holding, dialing or reaching for a mobile phone.

The new hours-of-service rules passed recently by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are a concern for us because our drivers rely on the 34-hour reset as it stands now.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration has awarded $77 million in grants to 22 universities to conduct research on a range of issues, including shared rail corridors, innovations in multimodal freight and infrastructure, bridge inspection methods and reducing roadway fatalities and injuries.

Shorepower Technologies and Cascade Technologies, which provide truck stop electrification, said they are adding six locations in California and Oregon to expand availability of anti-idling equipment.

Manufacturing activity in the Philadelphia region expanded at a faster pace in January, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said.
