WASHINGTON — Congressional leaders of transportation policy committees said corporate tax reform, private sector investments, and possibly raising fees for highway users are ways to fund a five-year highway bill that industries, including trucking, say is vital for business.

President Obama, in his State of the Union address, called on Congress to pass legislation that funds big-ticket infrastructure projects, which helps boost industries such as trucking and construction.

The South Carolina Ports Authority said container volume increased 12% in 2014 as it moves forward on a harbor-deepening project.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), chairman of the transportation policy committee in the House, said there is not enough congressional support to approve an increase of fuel taxes to pay for infrastructure projects vital to the trucking industry.

Rep. Peter DeFazio (Ore.), ranking Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, blasted the Department of Transportation for what he called repeated failures to address “longstanding and undisputed” pipeline and hazardous materials safety issues, including oil train safety.

Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the transportation policy-writing Environment and Public Works committee, said he will ask senators to consider a variety of funding proposals to advance a five-year highway bill this year.

About 91% of police accident reports contain enough information to determine fault in a truck-related crash, but assessing whether a truck and driver were at fault in a crash does not appear to improve the ability to predict crash risk when all crashes are considered, according to a long-awaited study unveiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
