SAN ANTONIO — Upcoming regulations, the presidential election, a softer freight market and supply chain disruptions are contributing to “uncertain times” for the trucking industry. But those challenges also present opportunities for fleets that are better prepared than their competitors, McLeod Software’s CEO said.

While many technologies will likely play a role in shaping the future of transportation, two of the most important will be the emergence of automated driving systems and the continuing evolution of data analytics.

Fleets and technology providers alike are optimistic about coming changes to International Fuel Tax Agreement record-keeping and audit procedures, saying the revisions will streamline carrier record-keeping requirements, accommodate advances in onboard technology and clarify specifications for states’ acceptance of data captured by electronic devices.

It’s a dire warning for a truck driver who has taken a wrong turn — a banner hanging over the roadway reading, “If you hit this sign you will hit that bridge.”

Carriers are using a variety of technologies and in-house systems to help monitor and improve their scores under the federal Compliance, Safety, Accountability program.

WASHINGTON — Leaders of a key congressional committee want auto safety regulators to tell them what they are doing to address concerns that vehicle safety may be compromised by hackers who may be able to affect automobiles by tapping into their systems through diagnostic ports and devices.
