UPS Inc. is counting on algorithms you can’t see to prove that investors were wrong to doubt its three-year, $20 billion technological makeover. It’s all part of CEO David Abney’s bet on squeezing out costs and becoming more nimble as UPS adjusts to surging e-commerce deliveries.

WASHINGTON — Nationwide policy for autonomous cars and trucks has the potential of facilitating the flow of freight while improving safety, according to a senior executive at UPS Inc. on Feb. 12.

The Federal Communications Commission is deciding whether further testing is needed to determine if communications between connected vehicles, including trucks, can share a slice of spectrum with Wi-Fi broadband services seeking to use it, too.

XPO Logistics Inc. will buy 5,000 warehouse robots from a Singapore startup backed by billionaire Peter Thiel as part of a deal that makes XPO the only logistics provider to use the technology in North America, the U.K. and eight other European countries.

Though it seems like every week there's a new startup introduced to the field, last-mile retail delivery is still a mess.
