As carriers await an upturn in the freight environment, executives say they continue to seek efficiencies and prepare their fleets for when the tipping point comes.

The U.S. Postal Service said Sept. 11 that it is ending discounts that shipping consolidators such as UPS and DHL use to get packages to the nation’s doorsteps.

UPS is acquiring a German firm that specializes in temperature-sensitive shipping to expand its health care logistics capabilities in Europe, the company announced Sept. 10.

UPS Inc. is laying off more of its employees, after earlier this year announcing it was cutting 12,000 jobs in its management ranks.

The decision, repealing measures in place since 2014, follows a six-month review of input from the public, law enforcement and first responders.

XPO has revived a sale of its European transportation business, according to people familiar with the matter, almost two years since it last scrapped the attempt to divest the operation.

Despite the reported net loss, investors appeared to be responding positively. It was primarily due to a one-time goodwill impairment charge related to the Omni acquisition.

Hub Group profit in the second quarter of 2024 fell due to the ongoing weakness in the North American freight market, but a final-mile acquisition in December 2023 offered a bright spot.
