HANOVER, Germany — Daimler Trucks focused on improving urban transportation during its media event ahead of the IAA commercial vehicles show, presenting three electric concept vehicles.

YOUNTVILLE, Calif. — Daimler Trucks North America announced its Detroit-branded DD5 medium-duty engine will officially hit the market later this year in the Freightliner M2 106 truck model.

Daimler AG, the world’s largest truck manufacturer, reported that second-quarter net profit rose 3% to $2.64 billion — or $2.50 per diluted share — powered by sales of cars and vans even as U.S. orders for medium- and heavy-duty trucks plunged.

Daimler AG rose the most in three weeks after the company solidified its lead in the luxury-car market and said it is confident of reaching this year’s underlying profit goals, despite more than 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in one-time costs in the second quarter.

Daimler AG and other truck makers are fighting to delay new emissions standards in Mexico as the government struggles to control the worst smog in the capital city in 14 years.

Daimler AG’s trucks division, seeking to recover from a profit warning last month, aims to boost future earnings with a plan to cut costs by sharing more engines, axles and other components across units in North America, Europe and Asia.
