As recently as two years ago, the Virginia Port Authority was losing millions of dollars annually. Now that the port's administration has gotten back to a break-even point, the board of directors is charting an ambitious course that projects to create hundreds of thousands of jobs around the state in the next half-century.

The Commonwealth of Virginia signed a deal with Konecranes to provide the Port of Virginia with 86 automated stacking cranes as part of a large-scale expansion at the Virginia International Gateway and Norfolk International Terminal over the next five years.

Two months after reporting that August was its all-time-busiest month, the port has another record-breaker on its hands.

While Nov. 8 is a paid holiday for dockworkers at the Port of Virginia, that doesn’t mean everybody will have a day off.
