A year-long surge in freight volume continues despite a modest dip in a widely followed truck tonnage index over the past two months.

Truck tonnage showed a slight downturn of 1.8% in August, according to American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted for-hire Truck Tonnage Index.

American Trucking Associations’ seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 1.9% in July, a jump of 8.6% compared with the same month a year ago. Another key indicator of the trucking industry’s overall health, the Cass Truckload Linehaul Index, shows that from both a volume and pricing perspective the U.S. freight economy remains strong.

Truck tonnage continued its powerful run in June, rising 7.8% compared with year-ago levels and up nearly 8% through the first half of 2018, according to American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted for-hire Truck Tonnage Index.

Truck tonnage rose 7.8% in May compared with the same month last year, according to American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted for-hire Truck Tonnage Index. The index was up 0.7% in May compared with April.

Truck tonnage rose 6.3% in March compared with the same period a year ago, according to American Trucking Associations’ monthly for-hire truck tonnage index.

Truck tonnage rose 3.7% in 2017, the largest annual increase since a 6.1% gain in 2013, according to American Trucking Associations’ Truck Tonnage Index. The annual increase came despite a 5.7% year-end drop in tonnage from November to December.

Freight surged in October and carriers are bracing for what could be a record-breaking holiday shipping season.

Recent growth in truck tonnage eased up a bit in September, but still advanced 7.4% year-over-year, American Trucking Associations reported Oct. 24.
