The CEO of the world’s biggest shipping company says it’s unlikely container vessels will operate without humans in his lifetime.

The world’s biggest container shipping line is trying to stop customers like Amazon.com Inc. and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. from becoming competitors in just a few years’ time.

A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S fell short of earnings expectations last year but promised its shareholders that profit at the world’s biggest shipping company will grow as much as 43% in 2018.

A massive consolidation is underway in the $500 billion global industry and the survivors now enjoy big economies of scale and increased demand, one year after excess capacity caused the sector’s worst-ever crisis - the bankruptcy of South Korea’s Hanjin Shipping Co.
