DETROIT — General Motors is adding over 132,000 heavy-duty pickups to a previous recall for tailgate release switches that can short circuit and open the gates while the trucks are in park.

WARREN, Mich. — General Motors Co. has developed a software-testing lab inside its Global Technical Center to prevent bugs from entering new vehicles and affecting customers.

This smaller recall from GM comes three years after a larger callback of the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt for a similar hazard.

“Just as mandates and regulations start to bite, the timing is not necessarily lining up very well, in that the purchase incentive support comes off,” GM Canada's president said. 

DETROIT — U.S. sales are down and a once-reliably profitable joint venture in China is losing money, but General Motors still managed to post a third quarter profit of $3 billion.

GM will commit $625 million toward what’s likely to be one of the biggest U.S. lithium mines, reinforcing the automaker’s efforts to secure domestic supply of the battery metal critical for EVs.

The enforcement action stems from an October 2023 incident in San Francisco in which a Cruise robotaxi dragged a pedestrian about 20 feet before coming to a complete stop.

Shares in General Motors and Ford tumbled Sept. 25 after a Morgan Stanley analyst warned that cars are too expensive for U.S. consumers and a price war in China will hurt the bottom line there.

The testing is small scale, with at most five vehicles being run with test drivers at the wheel to do development work.

General Motors' electric vehicle customers are getting access to Tesla Superchargers starting this month, following an agreement struck last year between CEOs Mary Barra and Elon Musk.
