INDIANAPOLIS — Diesel fuel dominates the commercial truck world today and will continue to do so in the near future, but greenhouse gas regulations will force the industry to use it more efficiently and eventually could push fleets toward other, cleaner fuels, industry executives said here at the Green Truck Summit.

The newest heavy-duty truck set to operate at the Port of Los Angeles emits an unusual byproduct that California could certainly use more of: water.

Oklahoma and Alaska are about as red as states can be. Oklahoma has only elected Republicans to the Senate going back to 1994. Republican Don Young has been Alaska’s only congressman since 1973. However, both states are considering raising fuel-tax rates for the first time since the 1980s.

With the contentious 2016 election over and few officials on the ballot again until 2018, transportation stakeholders believe that the current state legislative sessions could see fuel taxes raised to cover large funding shortfalls. Only New Jersey, which has off-year elections, did so in 2016.

A 5.9 cents per gallon fuel tax hike that had the support of then-Gov. Jay Nixon passed the Missouri Senate and two House committees last year, only to have the full lower chamber not even bring the bill up for a vote.

An Ohio judge ordered Pilot Flying J CEO Jimmy Haslam to give a deposition Dec. 13 in connection with a lawsuit filed against the nation’s largest truck-stop chain by two carriers that have alleged they were victims of a massive diesel fuel rebate fraud.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel slid 0.1 cent to $2.420 a gallon, according to the Department of Energy, as crude prices reflected the uncertainty global production would be slowed.
