Fewer Americans filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, a sign of steady progress in the labor market.

Trucking accounted for 1,500 of the 217,000 jobs added in May, and the U.S. unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.3%, the Labor Department reported June 6.

Fewer Americans filed applications for unemployment benefits over the past month than at any time in seven years, a sign the labor market continues to strengthen.

Trucking accounted for 6,800 of the 288,000 jobs added in April, and the unemployment rate dropped to 6.3%, the lowest level since September 2008, the Labor Department reported May 2.

Trucking accounted for 3,300 of the 192,000 jobs added in March, and the U.S. unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.7%, the Labor Department reported April 4.
