BILLINGS, Mont. — U.S. energy consumption plummeted to its lowest level in more than 30 years this spring as the nation’s economy largely shut down because of the coronavirus, federal officials reported July 29.

Though oil slid to an eight-week low, the drop was tempered by an unexpected decline in U.S. crude inventories and as the World Health Organization opted against declaring the virus a global health emergency.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel fuel rose 2.9 cents to $3.133 a gallon as the benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil price closed at $68.93 a barrel April 23, a jump of $5.92.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel slipped 0.9 cent to $2.901 a gallon. The cost of trucking's main fuel dropped in all regions, except New England (up 2.4 cents) and the Central Atlantic (unchanged).

The U.S. average retail price of diesel slipped 1.2 cents to $2.910 a gallon as oil prices closed in on $58 a barrel — but then forecasts for U.S. oil production pointed to record volumes next year, causing oil prices to ease some.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel rose 3.3 cents to $2.915 a gallon as oil hovered near $57 a barrel amid mounting talk of the glut of oil receding.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel jumped 6.3 cents to $2.882 a gallon as oil climbed to its highest price since June 2015.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel fell 1.6 cents to $2.786 a gallon as efforts to resupply fuel networks in areas struck by recent hurricanes continued, experts said.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel rose 4.4 cents to $2.802 a gallon on the heels of Hurricane Irma slamming into Florida on Sept. 10 and disrupting fuel supplies there.

The U.S. average retail price of diesel dipped 0.2 cent to $2.596 as crude oil prices were flat from the week before and failed to clear $48 a barrel amid forecasts U.S. shale oil production will set a record in September, experts said.
