Orders for durable goods unexpectedly dropped in February, a sign the slowdown in global growth may be weighing on American manufacturers.

Orders for durable goods dropped unexpectedly in September, falling for a second month, on waning demand for machinery and computers that signals companies are reluctant to invest in updating equipment.

Durable goods orders fell by 18.2% in August, as commercial airline orders plunged, the Commerce Department reported Sept. 25.

Orders for U.S. durable goods jumped in July by the most on record as bookings surged for commercial aircraft. Demand for business equipment eased after the biggest gain in seven months.

Orders for U.S. business equipment climbed in May, showing corporate investment is helping revive the economy after a slump at the start of the year.

Orders for goods meant to last at least three years increased 2.6% in March, the biggest gain since November, after rising 2.1% the prior month, the Commerce Department reported April 24.
