The average cost of a gallon of retail diesel fuel in the United States rose 6.3 cents to $4.089 last week, the Department of Energy reported, but truckers received some positive news as Hurricane Isaac appeared to have spared oil and fuel facilities in the Gulf.

So here we are again, trapped in still another fuel-price spiral, as we helplessly watch outside events and parties set the cost and supply of the precious liquids that make our industry possible.

The U.S. retail diesel average price rose 6.1 cents to $4.026 a gallon last week, the first time it has risen above $4 since May, the Department of Energy reported last week.

The price of diesel exhaust fluid at the pump at U.S. truck stops dropped significantly in July, following a similar decline for urea, the main ingredient in DEF.

U.S. retail diesel prices spiked 11.5 cents to $3.965 a gallon last week, the Department of Energy reported, the largest increase in 17 months. Experts attributed the gain to higher crude prices, falling inventories and a refinery fire.
