Inspectors will focus on brake linings and pad violations at this summer’s Brake Safety Week, scheduled for Aug. 20-26.

More than one of every 10 commercial vehicles inspected April 19 during a special one-day brake enforcement effort event were sidelined with bad brakes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has denied a petition filed by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance asking regulators to drop a requirement for trucks and trailers to display a legible certification label on their rear impact guards.

Inspectors in the United States and Canada pulled over more than 35,000 commercial motor vehicles during this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, issuing 26,164 warnings and citations to drivers for unsafe driving behaviors ranging from speeding to distracted driving.

Commercial motor vehicle inspectors in North America conducted 38,117 inspections Aug. 21-27 during Brake Safety Week, placing 13.3% of vehicles out of service for brake-related violations.

A five-day unannounced hazardous materials and dangerous goods inspection special enforcement effort in June netted 1,774 violations in the United States and Canada, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance reported Oct. 12.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance approved a new standard and procedure designed to govern inspections of autonomous commercial motor vehicles.

Commercial vehicle inspectors took 1,290 CMVs, or 14.1% of those inspected, out of service with critical brake-related violations on a special unannounced brake safety day operation.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has petitioned the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to amend agency regulations to require that interstate transporters of hemp carry a variety of shipping documents to avoid law enforcement uncertainties.
