Averitt Express launched a new less-than-containerload service last month to Dallas, built on the success of its Asia-to-Memphis Express service in the e-commerce and small business communities.

Averitt Express announced that it’s offering an on-the-job training program that is approved for veterans benefits, as the carrier commits to hiring 1,200 military veterans by 2020.

Intermodal rail and trucking companies are competing to meet the transportation needs of e-commerce businesses while adapting to how these new supply chains differ from those of traditional brick-and-mortar retailers.

Averitt Express Inc. has increased pay in an effort to recruit and retain drivers, a sign that the less-than-truckload sector of trucking is doing slightly better than the truckload side.

Averitt Express and Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. are the country's highest-rated privately held and publicly traded less-than-truckload carriers, respectively, according to a survey of more than 2,000 shippers in the United States that Mastio & Co. conducted last year.

Averitt Express Inc. has added new locations in Hagerstown, Maryland, and Saint Albans, West Virginia, to meet increasing demand for truckload services in both areas, the company said.

Averitt Express said it has launched two new import services from China, including one that will use the Panama Canal, whose expanded waterway is expected to open in June.
