Truckload carriers Western Express and Smithway Motor Xpress Corp. said they would close their pending deal, in which Western will acquire Smithway, in August.

Union workers at the Southern California ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach reached a tentative agreement with shipping lines and terminal operators, averting the threat of a strike at the biggest U.S. port complex, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Universal Truckload Services said late Thursday its second-quarter net income fell 12.6% to $4.7 million or 29 cents a share, from $5.4 million or 33 cents a year ago.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s second-quarter profit rose to $56 million or 26 cents a share, from $2 million or 1 cent last year.
