This toll road launch is the first mile of the four-lane state Route 509 Expressway being built by the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Advancing a program that stretches back more than 20 years, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced plans for a sweeping study of fatal heavy truck crashes.

Forty-five jurisdictions — 35 states and all 10 Canadian provinces — participated in the inspection campaign, with the vast majority of vehicles inspected in the U.S.

The legislation is particularly significant for Arizona's trucking industry, which faces an increasing number of lawsuits often backed by third-party funding.

If the rule is finalized, DOT would amend its federal drug-testing program regulation (49 CFR Part 40) to include both substances. Public comments on the proposal are due Oct. 17.

Information gathered will inform a Request for Proposals on facility upgrades that will open to vendors next year. The state’s current fuel contracts expire in 2027.

"It’s time to stop asking Virginians to pay tolls on this facility, and we are doing so five months early,” Gov. Glenn Youngkin said.
