The U.S. economy was sliding into recession, fuel prices were at all-time highs and trucking companies were scrambling to fill excess freight-hauling capacity.

As the Transportation Department moved to implement new security measures at airports and border crossings, freight haulers are bracing for longer delays, closer scrutiny of drivers and higher costs as some of the consequences of last week’s terrorist strike.

In trucking, there’s a time-honored tradition of learning on the job. But as the industry has grown in size and complexity, the need for executives with broader knowledge and sharper management skills appears to be increasing exponentially.

Thirty-six truck drivers from across Canada will compete in the 2001 National Professional Truck Driving Championships on Sept. 15 in Surrey, British Columbia.
