The ongoing struggle between Canada’s trucking industry and Environment Canada over the classification of diesel particulate matter has turned into a battle of scientific opinions.
On Aug. 8, the Canadian Trucking Alliance came out swinging against Environment Canada’s recent classification of diesel emissions as “toxic.”
The designation is “not substantiated by science and could mean an increased regulatory burden and civil liability for users of diesel fuel,” CTA said in its letter to the agency.
In June, Environment Canada officially added PM10 emissions — particulate matter smaller than 10 microns — to its list of toxic substances. Canadian law states that a substance can be classified as toxic if it constitutes a danger to human life.
