Less-than-truckload carrier Saia Inc. reported a first-quarter profit compared with a loss a year earlier, as tonnage improved.
Net income was $700,000, or 4 cents a share, compared with a loss of $3.2 million, or 21 cents a year ago. Revenue rose 15% to $243 million.
Operating income jumped to $4.1 million, from an operating loss of $2.1 million a year ago.
LTL tonnage per workday was up 3.9% from a year ago, while shipments per workday were up 2.2%, Saia said.
Saia is ranked No. 24 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
