and revamp its less-than-truckload network, adding more than 100 new lanes in the latest phase of what is now about a five-year process.

The Downers Grove, Ill.-based carrier ranks No. 78 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America. It ranks No. 19 among LTL carriers.

Revamping Roadrunner’s LTL network began after the carrier spun off what is now Ascent Global Logistics in August 2020, as well as selling three truckload units and its Prime Distribution Services business. C.H. Robinson acquired the Prime Distribution Services unit in January 2020 for $225 million.

Roadrunner’s latest lanes add over 21,000 new miles of coverage across the U.S. and Canada and establish Kansas City as a major new hub, the company said July 24.

The expansion follows March’s addition of 278 lanes to the carrier’s network.

“This expansion moves us closer to our goal of becoming the pre-eminent longhaul LTL carrier in the country,” said Chief Operating Officer Tomasz Jamroz, who also controls a majority stake in the company.

Midwest cities will see the largest expansion, with lanes originating from Cincinnati; Cleveland; Detroit; Indianapolis; Louisville, Ky.; Milwaukee; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Grand Rapids Lansing, Mich.; Chicago; and Columbus, Ohio. All will be connected to the Kansas City hub.

As part of the expansion, Roadrunner is augmenting its Smart Guarantee Lane service, which commits to on-time delivery or the shipment is free.

New lanes added to the program include: Houston to Atlanta; Philadelphia to Dallas; Seattle to Dallas; San Francisco to Chicago; and Milwaukee to Dallas, Houston and San Francisco.

When the service was launched in October 2023, the guarantee was available on 30 lanes. The guaranteed service costs 25% more than regular charges.
