Post Office Names David Steiner Postmaster General

The U.S. Postal Service has selected FedEx Corp. board member David Steiner to be the country’s next postmaster general, the agency announced May 9.
Steiner, 65, was selected by the USPS board of governors to succeed former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who resigned in March.
Current Acting Postmaster General Doug Tulino will now return to his permanent position as deputy postmaster general and chief human resources officer, according to the agency.
Steiner is “is a highly regarded leader and executive with tremendous vision, experience and skill that can be applied to the long-term mission and business needs of the Postal Service,” said Amber McReynolds, chair of the Postal Service Board of Governors, in a statement.

The former CEO of Waste Management Inc., Steiner was vetted for the postmaster general position after a conditional offer for the job, Bloomberg NewsreportedMay 7.
The USPS board spent months looking for a new leader after DeJoy abruptly resigned in March. DeJoy had pushed for changes to promote efficiency at the postal service, including cutting its labor workforce by tens of thousands and raising postal rates.
Many Americans now wait longer to get their mail and the agency continues to bleed cash. President Donald Trump has considered alternatives, such as taking the service private or folding it into the Department of Commerce. The agency signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to cut costs and drive productivity.
Steiner said in a statement that he believes “strongly” in maintaining the Post Office “as an independent establishment of the executive branch.”
The postal service is overseen by a board of governors, who are nominated by the president.
