USPS Eyes FedEx’s David Steiner for Postmaster General Role

The U.S. Postal Service is zeroing in on FedEx Corp. board member David Steiner to be the country’s next postmaster general, according to people familiar with the matter.
Steiner, the former CEO of Waste Management Inc., is being vetted for the position after the USPS board of governors conditionally offered him the role, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private.
Steiner, 65, would still have to go before the board for a formal vote.
Steiner didn’t respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the postal service declined to comment.
The USPS board has spent months looking for a new leader after Louis DeJoy abruptly resigned in March. DeJoy had pushed for sweeping changes to promote efficiency at the postal service, including cutting its labor workforce by tens of thousands and raising postal rates.
But the overhaul had limited results. Many Americans are now waiting longer to get their mail and the agency continues to bleed cash, prompting President Donald Trump to muse about taking the service private or folding it into the Department of Commerce. The agency signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to work with the postal service to cut costs and drive efficiency.
Steiner, who ran Waste Management from 2004 to 2016, also sits on the board of Vulcan Materials Co. and AMP Robotics Corp., a private recycling company.
He was among a number of candidates presented to the White House for approval, according to the Washington Post, citing people familiar with the decision. The postal service is overseen by a board of governors with as many as nine members, who are nominated by the president.
FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America, No. 2 on the TT 50 list of the largest global freight carriers and No. 43 on the TT 100 list of the largest logistics companies in North America.
