N.J. Tunnels Raised to Allow Double-Stacked Containers
Intermodal facilities at the Port of New York and New Jersey were enhanced recently with the raising of two tunnels to allow double-stacked containers to travel on rails from the port to the Midwest and beyond.
Completed last month, the construction project cost more than $21 million dollars and was a joint effort by New Jersey and CSX Transportation Inc.
The state’s $10 million share of the construction costs came from the 2005 federal transportation reauthorization bill, SAFETEA-LU.
Under the reauthorization, New Jersey has received $100 million for transportation upgrades in the port area designated as the Liberty Corridor, which SAFETEA-LU said has national significance in terms of economic development and freight movement.
The tunnels run under Jersey City, with one dating back to the presidential administration of Abraham Lincoln.
