The New York State Thruway Authority is embarking on a $12.3 million project to rehabilitate a bridge built in 1953 over Interstate 90 that handles 25,000 vehicles daily.

The span is located in Montgomery County at the foot of the Adirondacks. The aging bridge is over New York State Route 5S, a 73-mile-long, east-west Mohawk Valley highway. Montgomery County is a growing multimodal hub with transportation, warehousing and logistics industries. The county is located 50 miles from Albany and 60 miles from the Port of Coeymans marine terminal.

“The Thruway bridge over Route 5S is a busy connector in the Mohawk Valley area,” noted Frank Hoare, executive director of the Thruway Authority. “This project will enhance safety and extend the life span of the bridge for decades to come. Investing in our infrastructure creates a reliable transportation system while maintaining some of the lowest toll rates in the nation.”

The Thruway is a limited-access highway running throughout New York state that provides key highway connections to surrounding states and Canada. I-90 is a mainline extending along 426 miles from New York City to Buffalo.

Last year, the Thruway Authority replaced five bridges, refurbished 13 bridges and inspected 468 bridges over the 570-mile Thruway network, which celebrated its 70th year of service in June 2024. With three piers, the Thruway bridge over NYS Route 5S is 327 feet long. The project includes replacing the deck, repairing the substructure and redoing pavement on the approaches to the bridge. Once repairs are complete, the service life of the bridge will be extended by 50 years. New guiderail and reflective striping will be added in other safety upgrades.

“The rehabilitation of the I-90 bridge over NYS Route 5S represents the New York State Thruway Authority’s ongoing commitment to modernizing our transportation system and enhancing safety and reliability for everyone traveling on the Thruway,” a spokesperson told Transport Topics.

The bridge repair project will be completed in phases. During the initial part, eastbound and westbound traffic will shift to the eastbound bridge while work takes place on the opposite westbound bridge. In the fall, the project will halt until the conclusion of the winter. Then traffic will return to normal configuration. Next spring marks the second phase when all vehicles will be directed to the new westbound bridge until construction is complete on the eastbound structure. Project completion is scheduled for fall 2026.

Drivers are likely to experience traffic slowdowns or stops on Route 5S and the Thruway during construction. Roadway message signs will be posted with construction updates and work zone speed limits. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.

“With construction season underway, we remind all motorists to slow down and use extreme caution when entering work zones for the safety of all highway workers,” the spokesperson noted.

The Thruway Authority’s 2025-2029 Capital Plan has earmarked $2.7 billion to invest in infrastructure improvements. Last year, it processed some 400 million toll transactions from motorists who drove 8.2 billion miles on the Thruway. In 2024, the Thruway’s infrastructure projects included improving 41 lane miles of highway pavement.
