Trucking companies carrying loads into Canada will be required to use unique carrier identification numbers in 2001, according to the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.

Beginning Jan. 8, 2001, CCRA will no longer accept the generic 2ITN carrier code on Prearrival Review System bar-coded customs documentation. CCRA warns that carriers not using their unique code by this date may be delayed crossing the border into Canada. Some may even have penalties assessed.

The 2ITN carrier code is a generic identification number for itinerant, or non-bonded, carriers. However, some trucking companies under PARS were still using the 2ITN codes because they were able to get preprinted documents at no cost from CCRA with bar codes already on them.

Any carrier using PARS and having its own carrier code is required to print its own bar-coded documents following CCRA’s specifications. According to Linda Paul at CCRA, 97% of PARS entries have their own carrier code.
