More than 5,000 logistics professionals will gather in Toronto Oct. 17 to 20 for the 1999 meeting of the Council of Logistics Management to focus on strengthening the international logistics network.

Logistics, once simply called physical distribution, is now a $750 billion-a-year industry, according to Larry Sur, executive vice president of supply chain management for Schneider National in Green Bay, Wis. Sur will chair the conference.

“This is the last conference of the old millennium, and the first one held outside the United States” Sur said. It will have a more international flare than in the past, he added.

Logistics has grown in importance because companies have found that by designing their logistics network properly, they can gain a competitive advantage, according to Sur. “Logistics has been receiving a lot of attention because shippers and carriers have understood that they can make progress by reducing waste, cutting cost and improving service,” he said.
