The is seeking grant applications by July 7 for $89.4 million in funds to improve highway safety.

FMCSA announced this year’s program is different than in the past since Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy removed the previous as well as those for diversity, equity and inclusion.

“This change ensures taxpayer dollars are now fully dedicated to genuine safety improvements, appropriate accountability and real, measurable outcomes,” FMCSA noted June 6. “Potential applicants are instructed to thoroughly review the reformed application guidelines to align with these necessary and refocused priorities.”

Typically, state driver’s license agencies apply for the funds to help them improve their compliance with federal CDL regulations.

“Other types of entities may also apply for grant projects that will have a nationwide impact on improving the national CDL program, such as training to eliminate the masking of driving violations, or solutions to increase the timeliness of conviction processing between courts and state driver licensing agencies,” according to FMCSA.

This recent announcement of available funds noted that up to $89.4 million is available, which is a large upswing from the last funding granted in the program. In fiscal 2024, $55.1 million was allocated in 41 grants to 30 state organizations.

The states receiving the highest grant amounts in fiscal 2024 were Louisiana, $7.7 million; New York, $7.3 million; Virginia, $5 million; and South Carolina, $4.6 million. The smallest funding allocations went to Florida, $35,168; Colorado, $39,200; and Hawaii, $67,226.

Non-state agencies receiving fiscal 2024 funding were Marshall University Research Corp. for a West Virginia project, as well as the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, National Center for State Courts and the Professional Truck Driver Institute Inc. — all for Virginia projects.

“The program ensures that only properly trained and qualified individuals are eligible to obtain and retain a CDL, reinforcing highway safety across all states. At its core is the principle of ‘One Driver. One License. One Record,’ ” FMCSA stated.

FMCSA’s funding for this grant program is meant to strengthen state compliance with federal safety mandates and improve the National Commercial Driver’s License Program. A key part of FMCSA’s goal is to reduce roadway crashes, injuries and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.

Applicants for this latest round of funding must electronically submit complete grant proposals by 5 p.m. Eastern time July 7 through the grants.gov website.
