FedEx Freight opened a service center in Greenwood, Ind., at the end of May, the carrier said.
’s less-than-truckload division now has 323 terminals nationwide with the latest facility opening plus 13 relay locations.
The 125-door service center is set to meet growing demand in the Indianapolis market, while serving the Louisville, Ky., and Muncie, Ind., markets, FedEx said.
Based on nearly 43 acres, the 89,527-square-foot service center includes an office, dock and break room pod. In addition, there is an on-site 10,800-square-foot shop maintenance facility. On-site fuel services also are available.
The facility increases FedEx Freight’s door count in the Indianapolis market to 377 doors from 252.

FedEx Freight now has two LTL facilities in the metropolitan Indianapolis area.
In February, the carrier opened a 76-door terminal in Sioux Falls, S.D. The facility, which includes a 55,000-sqaure-foot building with office and fleet maintenance space under one roof, replaced an existing FedEx terminal in the city.
FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America, and FedEx Freight is No. 1 on the LTL carriers list. FedEx also ranks No. 2 on the TT Top 50 list of the largest global freight carriers. FedEx Logistics ranks No. 43 on the TT Top 100 logistics companies list.
Scale and density is vital in the LTL space, so an expansive terminal network is crucial. However, they require a great deal of land — something not easy to find near metropolitan areas — and are expensive to build.
That’s why many of the largest LTL players have been bidding aggressively for bankrupt carrier Yellow’s real estate assets over the past 18 months in a series of auctions and private sales.
When Yellow filed for court protection in August 2023, the carrier owned 169 terminals, leased a further 142 and was ranked No. 3 among LTL carriers.
Top-ranked FedEx Freight’s revenue in the three months that ended Dec. 31 — the parent company’s third fiscal quarter — fell 5% year over year to $2.09 billion from $2.21 billion, while operating income fell 23% to $261 million from $341 million. Results were affected by lower fuel surcharges, reduced weight per shipment and fewer shipments.

FedEx Freight is set to be spun off by the parent company by June 2026.
The well-received split, announced in December 2024, will make the largest LTL carrier in North America a stand-alone entity.
FedEx Corp. in mid-May revealed the leadership team for the spun-off LTL unit, naming veteran executive John A. Smith as CEO and board member R. Brad Martin chairman.
Smith is chief operating officer of the parent group’s U.S. and Canada operations at present, with responsibility for parcel and LTL surface operations among other things. He previously held the role of FedEx Freight president and CEO between 2018 and 2021.
The executive also is treasurer of . In addition, he serves on the boards of the and the .
