Diesel, Gasoline Prices Level Off Following Attacks

Both the price of diesel fuel and gasoline appear to have leveled off on Thursday, though there is still some volatility in the Midwest, according to T-Chek Systems and AAA.

While the biggest trucks run on diesel fuel, a significant portion of the commercial trucking business is carried out in trucks that use gasoline. Both fuels impact the cost of truck service.

The average price of diesel fuel did rise by .0025 cent between Wednesday afternoon and noon EDT Thursday, according to T-Chek. While that does reflect an increase of more than 7 cents per gallon since the beginning of the week, the group noted that the wholesale average has remained at $1.025 per gallon, which suggests prices should start pulling back soon.

T-Check said there have been reports that some people have been charged as much as $4 per gallon in the Midwest, although the average price in the area is currently $1.622.

At the same time, the average price of regular unleaded gasoline is up 0.8 cent to $1.541 per gallon since Tuesday's attacks. This shows motorists and gas stations have "reacted calmly and responsibly with regard to fuel consumption and pricing," AAA said.

The Associated Press reported prices were as high as $3.30 per gallon in some areas in Iowa, and the state government is currently investigating some gas stations for gouging customers.
