Detroit Diesel Corp. said Thursday that it was notified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice that the government will not change the consent decree schedule to meet more stringent engine emissions standards by October 2002.

The company said DDC and some other manufacturers had asked the government for additional time because they were seeking more testing to ensure the commercial acceptability of the new lower emitting engines.

Detroit Diesel said it has begun the installation of new engine manufacturing facilities that will cost more than $136 million.

The Detroit-based company designs, manufactures, sells and services heavy-duty diesel and alternative fuel engines, automotive diesel engines and engine-related products.
