Daimler Truck Financial Services USA and Geico launched a connected insurance program that uses real-time driving data to lower premiums for Freightliner and Western Star truck owners.

The new program, called Connected Insurance, targets owner-operators and small fleets seeking lower insurance costs and improved safety. It builds on Geico’s DriveEasy Pro platform and is managed through Daimler Truck Insurance Agency, a subsidiary of Daimler Truck Financial Services.

Using Detroit Connect telematics data from participating vehicles, the program allows insurers to assess driver behavior and risk more accurately. Customers who share their data can qualify for savings of up to 10% on commercial vehicle insurance premiums. Because the system uses existing onboard technology, no additional devices or cameras are required.

Kevin Bangston, president and CEO of Daimler Truck Financial Services North America, said the partnership combines technology and finance to ease a major cost for small operators. “This strategic partnership with Geico introduces a smart, data-driven insurance option that helps our customers reduce one of their largest operational expenses,” he said.

Daimler Truck said it plans to expand its use of connected vehicle data across its financial products.

Chris Sions, Geico’s head of partnerships, said telematics data provides a clearer picture of driver performance. “Real-time data from Daimler Truck’s telematics platform allows us to better assess risk, reward safe driving and deliver meaningful savings to our customers,” Sions said.

The American Transportation Research Institute in 2024 ranked insurance costs as the No. 4 top issue in trucking, particularly small fleets.
